Reviving Fallen Flags

What would it take to get CSX and NS to paint a few of their locos in the paint schemes and road names of the various Fallen Flags that they have absorbed through the years? Nice way for them to acknowledge their heritiage and demonstrate ownership of the names that they seem to so jealously guard.

I don’t think it would take much. I think the case is much stronger now that UP has set the precedent.

CSX just allowed a shotrline connector in WVa to repaint a GP-30 in the Chessie/B&O scheme. Where things might get a little confusing is with regards to the former Conrail roads since Conrail still exists as a legal entity and I don’t know if the rights to its constituent road names were passed to NS and CSX during the breakup process. I wouldn’t expect either road to pursue any idea like this if they didn’t already own the names.

Wishful thinking on my part that this will ever occur.

Those UP fallen flags look pretty sharp and they go a long way with public relations and just for nostalgia sake. Cross your fingers!

I understand that neither NS or CSX has any rights to the Pennsylvania or Penn Central heralds. Just when I was hoping to see some intertwined worms. Darn.

Probably a dumb question, but how exactly does CONRAIL live on?

As a shared asset. I can’t claim to be an expert, but IIRC, there were several areas (NYC and Detroit, for two) where the split between NS and CSX wouldn’t have been to everyone’s liking, so Conrail lives on, serving both roads. Sort of like BRC.

Seems like TRAINS discussed this in a past issue…

On the subject of painting units in honor of fallen flags, I should think that unless someone is going to pu***he license thing with regard to eastern roads, perhaps a gentlemen’s agreement could be reached. I know there are non-railroad owners of several operational E’s that have them painted in EL and PRR colors - haven’t heard of any issues with rights, etc. We certainly know that it’s been done in the past, such as the GG-1 what was redone in PRR livery.

I’d kill to see a locomotive in the Monon livery.

I also believe that Penn Central lives on as real estate company so either Penn Central or Conrail still owns the names of their fallen flags.

I do hope NS brings back a N&W unit and a Southern unit. CSX with the B&O and old C&O schemes. I love the B&O. I want it reborn. I do know this though i seen 2 old chessie B&O engines at the MT. Vernon Alco yard 1 GP35 and sw1000. Very nice and old.

Ky Railway Museum has A Monon BL-2,#32 on property and running.
I think that this is their web,I had a little trouble finding the correct one.

Perhaps if we are all lucky the U.P. heritage jobs will begin a trend with roads such as BNSF, NS, CSX, etc.

It sure would be sweet to see one each of the heritage or fallen flag roads from these monsters roaming the rails again.

… It would be nice to see BNSF and CSX bring back real names to their railroads…
