Al Chione has reported that famous railway photographer Richard Kindig has passed away earlier today at the age of 92.
…[V] he will be missed…but his legacy will live on in his pictures
Although Mr. Kindig’s passing marks a sad moment among us railfans, I would like to recall an incident that illustrates his wisdom.
Many years ago an interesting encounter happened either at a Rocky Mountain Railroad Club meeting or at the Club’s annual banquet. A young railfan approached Mr. Kindig with complaints about the then state of freight train operations. The young man’s main dissatisfaction was that seemingly every freight train he photographed had SD40-2’s on the point.
Mr. Kindig’s wise advise to that youngster was this: take as many pictures of those locomotives and trains as you can, because someday they’ll all be gone.
How true a statement that was!

Though showing the effects of age, he attended the 2005 UP Historical Society convention in Denver, and seemed to be a real gentleman.
It was an honor to see in person such a legendary figure in our railfan hobby.
Thanks for the great body of work, Dick. May you rest in peace.
