wow, 99 views! Lots of squinting!
Handsome–but my favorite Rio Grande F unit is still the F-3 in black and yellow.
Nice model, though.

Black and yellow stripes is a handsome model. I take it you model the 1940’s thru about 1953. I think oldest dated picture I’ve seen in black paint from Rio Grande Diesels Volume 1 is 1953 although a few might have straggled on a year later. If you don’t have it, get Rio Grande in Color Volume III, it goes back into the 40’s time frame and has lots of nice colors. I have an old aquaintence from Indiana who models 1953 so he has alot of the black diesels as well as steam and the budding 4-stripe scheme. Its a nice year to model because of the variety.
For me, I can barely remember railroads of the 1960’s having been born in 1959 so I’m even stretching to go back into the single stripe era. My modeling period for rolling stock goes from 1965-1990 (still very wide) but it does help me limit purchases somewhat.
Very nice model…just my era as well…
Actually, I haven’t really entered the ‘diesel’ age on my Rio Grande layout–still steaming away and ignoring locomotive history right and left, LOL. But you’re right, I mainly model the 'forties. However, I will say that IMO, Rio Grande simply fielded some of the handsomest diesels I’ve ever seen. I liked ALL of their color schemes, from yellow/black through the 4-pin stripe to the single stripe. And their black and orange Tunnel motors just knock me out–unfortunately, if I bought one and tied it on the end of one of my 1940’s freights, I’d probably get funny looks from everyone in the neighborhood. But that Grande Gold and silver is one of the handsomer diesel paint schemes I remember seeing. Really striking against those Rocky Mountain backdrops.
Are you going to get the F-7? I’d be interested to hear how P2K stacks up in the diesel department–the
I have pre-ordered an ABBA set with sound in one of them. However, from the first release of Great Northern F7’s by P2K, I’ve heard lots of good things about them, so far nothing bad really.
I agree - all the paint jobs used by Rio Grande are handsome. I’m just happy that finally an F7 has been offered in single stripe. (this is a first in HO).
Darn, now I want 3 sets of these F7s, SP, UP, and D&RGW… I can’t afford all those at once. Good news is they’re selling seperate B’s for UP and D&RGW… Can you say ABB?
