Can someone please tell me why they painted the Rio Grande Zephyr F9 5771 in the four-stripe paint scheme (when restored for the Colorado Railroad Museum) which it never actually wore in active service?
In service:

Restored:

probably because it looked good.
The National Railroad Museum has an S-3 (Well an alco s-something) painted in CNW. CNW never even ownd that particular model.

The people who restored it sure as hell better not have taken off that beautiful Rio Grande horn [:(!]
Did it ever wear that paint for an excursion or special?
Actually, yes it did. The single black stripe, IIRC became the scheme in the 60’s.
Here’s a history of the paint schemes: http://utahrails.net/drgw/rg-diesel-paint-schemes.php
