Rip-Rap,( not to be confused with Riff-Raff of Underdog fame)

Every day I see the Dakota & Iowa train come through town with the “rock train”. A lot of the rock from the quarry is quite large-ranging from basketball size to desk size. What would be the main use for huge amounts of rock like this? Anybody?

LOL, why would we confuse rocks with Dave (Futuremood) or Mike Sol…???

Use for the rock could be a number of things. First of all if it is of many varying sizes jumbled together it is probably heading for a crusher where it will be crushed and sifted into various sizes and grades from dust to large rip rap.

Much of the larger size rip rap is used for construction or to stabilize roads or roadbeds such as erosion control. Other sizes may be used for concrete or asphalt operations as a component of pavement. Hope that answers your question.

What Character, don’t you enjoy our favorite comedy team?

Rip-Rap, or rocks of varing size is often used up-stream of bridge footings. The rocks help break up the stream current in order to prevent erosion of the soil(gravel) at the foot of bridge piers. An Interstate bridge in NY State collapsed because the contractor did not put down the correct size of rocks(Rip-Rap).

It is also used where railroad tracks run alongside rivers to prevent washouts. Seaside communities use it for jettys.

To clarify a little-the quarry also ships a lot of crushed rock used by, I believe BNSF and UP. Judging from how beat up some of the gondolas are,it appears they must be loaded by big front end loaders. Trying not to overload a car must be talent on the part of the equipment operators. How would you unload a gondola full of desk-sized pink rocks?

Carefully?

And is he saying Dave is as thick as a brick?

Ed[:D]

Could these gondolas be rotated by a machine to be unloaded…?

I dunno Ed, but I’ll bet he is a desk sized PINK rock…LOL…

Likely reasons those gons are beat up include the loading, and the unloading, probably done with a backhoe. Not likely a quarry is going to invest the money needed for a tipper…

Actually, for those of us old enough to remember it, Riff Raff was a bad guy on Underdog

Hey, yeah thats right!
Who did Underdogs voice?
I can see his face but can’t put a name with it…

Wally Cox?

Ding, ding, ding…Wally Cox is the correct answer! Good job Murphy Siding!

Allen Swift did the voice of “Riff Raff” as well as many others…

Don Adams of “Get Smart” fame did the voice of “Tennesee Tuxedo”

Mike

I once had a district manager who was the spittin’ image of Simon Bar-Sinister, another bad guy on Underdog. He (the district manager) was a spooky, spooky, man.[}:)]

…air-dumps (as in DIFCO or the earlier Magcor junk…best thing that ever came out of Findlay OH)[:-^]

I once had a manager that sounded exactly like Deputy Dawg, looked a bit like him too. It was hard not to laugh when I first met him, and even more so when I realized who he reminded me of…[:D]

Mike

SDR_North: Thanks! That was pretty cool! Is there any way to tell if a car is an air dump, while sitting at the crossing?

Hey, Murph. Are you really that ignorant of basic construction materials (and you being an alleged lumber salesperson and all[;)]? Or do you consider it a charitable act to play dumb for the collective neo-egos of the banjo boys?

Hey, let’s play your favorite game - Trolling for Errors!

Okay, hands on the buzzer.

Question #1 - Can you spot the error in “Character”'s answer?

Here it is for review (minus the obligatory limp wristed attempt at an insult directed at yours truly):

Okay, your time starts…NOW!

Well Dave…If you’re trying to start a flame war with me, -on several threads at onceto boot!- I’m not interested in playing that game. We’ve been through this before. Here’s how the math works: 1976 is when I got out of junior high. I didn’t care for junior high games then, nor do I now.
Let me repeat something that I know I’ve explained to you several times. Reading and learning about trains is my hobby not my obcession. I am curious by nature, therefore, I ask a lot of questions about things that interest me. If, I can get someone in the railroad business to explain something well, it’s usually worth the enquirery. I feel no need to fight with anybody-you included. Thanks, not interested. I’ve found that if you treat people with respect, they will generally respect you. I am trying to respect you and your opinions.
That being said, I’m thankful for people who are nice enough to answer questions. An example is SDR_North, in this thread. Tommorrow, I’m going to try to figure out if the rock train has air dump cars-just for fun.
Why not lighten up a little? That’s what I’m doing, and I refuse to take this too seriously![(-D][(-D][(-D]
