I just installed a Digitrax DH123D decoder in a Rivarossi Challenger from the late 90’s. I would like to program appropriate start voltage, acceleration, deceleration, and top voltage parameters into the decoder. Does anyone have any suggestions. I also would like to program these parameters in my Bachmann 2-8-0, 4-8-2, and 2-8-2 Sy locomotives, as well as in my Rivarossi 2 truck Heisler.
I usually give my decoders a value of 4 for CVs 3 and 4 for momentum settings, and adjust from there. For start voltage, CV 2, try a value of 2 to begin, and increase if this isn’t high enough. There’s no set rule on what works best because every locomotive’s motor and drive train is different, so these CVs have to be tweaked. Higher values will give you more coast (momentum), but only when going forward. CVs 3 and 4 never seem to have an effect on momentum when running in reverse. For some reason, trying to adjust momentum on QSI sound systems by changing CVs 3 and 4 from their default value of zero causes the brake squeal to be disabled, but SoundTraxx decoders will accept this adjustment with no problems, so it seems that every decoder manufacturer does things their own way as far as CVs 2, 3, and 4 are concerned.
