know their here somewhere, tried the seach function with no luck.
one question i have is on the DCC ready loco its said the normal decoder location is in the firebox area, assuming theres a dummy plug there does anything need be done to it when installing a Tsunami heavy steam decoder and speaker in the tender? assume the wiring harness coming from the engine would be attached at that place…will that PCB have to be removed.
You must have one of the pre 2005 H-8’s. I own 3 (All post 2005) and electronics are all in the tender.
There’s some nice space up in the cab, but I would take the tsunami dimensions and cut out a double stack piece of cardboard to see if it fits.
I personally installed the large steam Titan with two 1.57" highbass drivers in the tender which sounds fantastic. (You must be willing to file down the sides of the speakers to get them to fit. It’s really tight in there. You can use a tsunami on those speakers, but it won’t be nearly as loud, and you risk overheating the amp.
Another viable location for one of the speakers is in the steam chest. But it will be smaller then what you can fit into the tender. (obviously)
When I installed in my Big Boy, I put one speaker facing up in the smoke stacks and cardboard large enclosure(I prefer cardboard enclosures over plastic) and one facing down in the tender (with the entire tender body as the enclosure). It was neat having 2 speakers with pretty good separation passing by. Good to have some noise coming from the smoke stacks too. And I agree with above, use the largest high bass speakers you can fit in, even with filing, etc.
