Rivarossi GG1

Has anyone reworked one of these into a decent runner? I have several, but am sorely disappointed in the way they run. Can they be re-motored? Has anyone gone beyond the factory detail? Thanks for any ideas and experience you can offer.

Mike,

I have one GG1 left (had 4 of them) and they all run/ran fairly well but since they have the large flanges I can’t run them on my new layout with code 83 rail. There is a remotor kit for the GG1 that was on Ebay and I think the guy goes by the name of ‘Motorman’. You can do a search for remotor and when you find the listings for him, you will have to contact him or go to his website to request the kit for your loco. Good luck. I wish they made a wheel kit for it, I love the engines.

I have dealt with this guy at his website and then ebay. He is the motorman at:

micro-loco-motion.com

He did a HO CP Huntington 4-2-4 motor/gear mod for me.

Thanks so much for the info. I agree, the flanges do present quite a problem, especially since all I have is code 83!

LION has two of these GG1s they were smooth runners in their day, but they did have problems. There is no place for them (yet) on my layout which is now strictly NYCT. I will be building a static display of NYP on my layout where I will show off my old passenger cars, but they will not be connected to the mane lion. You can bet the GG1s will be prominent on this display.
