Hi. I’m new here & I will try to be brief. I have an older RIVAROSSI 4-8-8-4 Big Boy that needs new nylon driving gears…the ones from the motor worm gears to the wheel sets. This locomotive was my dad’s favorite. He has since passed away, & I inherited all of his “N” scale collection. I am not a model railroad hobbyist or enthusiast, however, I would like to have this locomotive repaired to proper running condition. Once I achieve this goal, I will offer it up for sale in the near future to someone who truly enjoys the hobby. Can anyone help me with locating a good parts source for this locomotive? My guess is that this loco is at least 15 years old.
If your goal is to sell it eventually,why don’t you try selling it “as is”,you’d save yourself the trouble of finding the parts and then the repair chore.These aren’t the easiest to work on as a first repair attempt.With the advent of the newer DCC/Sound equipped Big Boys in N scale,these have lost some of their value and don’t get the top dollars they used to get two or three years ago.
I personally have the same sitting in it’s box awaiting repairs also and will eventually fix it (lack of time) but I will encounter the same problems you have…parts availability.Let me know if you decide to sell…
Thanks for the reply. I really haven’t given any thought to selling the Big Boy “as is”. I truly don’t have any idea of what it is worth. The loco’s motor does run smoothly. it just needs the driving gears. I have seen running used ones on eBay recently go for $175+. If I should decide to sell “as is”, would you be interested, & if so, what would be your offer?
