So in the matter of just under a minute My Rivarossi 4-8-4 Northern ran down the mainline at full speed, The drivers lost Quarter, siezed up and bent a drive rod, snapped a bolt that holds the driver on the wheel and cracked a wheel. Does anyone know where I can find a new powertrain for this? Preferrably with solid metal wheels.
Sorry! As far as I know, the only place you can get parts for this engine is from another Riv 4-8-4. I don’t believe parts from another loco would fit. If I’m wrong, someone onthe forum will correct me.
Try e-Bay for a dead one. You may have to watch for some time, but if you’re not in a hurry, you could get lucky.
Darrell, feeling lucky, but quiet…for now
You could also try emailing Hornby at www.hornby.com - they bought the Rivarossi brand a while ago and are planning to re-introduce some of the range, they may have some parts for earlier ones too (depending on what the situation was at the Riv plant - I’m guessing production was ongoing at the time of the buyout so Hornby may well have ended up with trays of parts as well as some complete locos). Good luck
Bowser lists a Northern mechanism for less than $60

You should be able to mount the Rivarossi boiler on it without to much trouble.
How about the newer Riv FEF-3 as a replacement canidate? This improved 21 1/4 oz loco has looks and power.
Should be problem free.
The Bowser Northern repower kit is for a Bachmann Northern so it might not be as easy as you think. Try Golf Manor Hobbies (in Cincinnati) at www.GOLFMANORHOBBIES.com (they aren’t the most concientious Emailers) or phone them at (513) 351-3849 3pm- 9pm EST. I had more luck phoning them, they have a large stock of Rivarossi parts but they can be a bit pricey so you might consider looking for a newer production Rivarossi Northern with the can motor and RP25 wheels and traction tire.
What a drastic chain of events! As I read your post, I kept expecting more and more things to happen. Just keep scrouging Ebay. Something’ll turn up.
The Northern mechanism I was referring to is the one for Bowser’s Northern not the Bachmann upgrade.
It might be more work than some may want to do.
ray I just checked that link and it looks like the 1-100489 (4-8-4 Mechanism ) the link is shaded out so it may be out of stock or dicoed

Check with Northwest Shortline, they may be able to fix you up.
It is a newer model, it does have the can motor. and I dont really have the money to buy a whole new one. All I can say is at least it didnt take a tumble off the edge of the module like the last few cars did. There is a Brand new one on eBay but I think it would just be blasphemous to tear apart that mint one to fix up my better looking one. I like the UP grey better than the UP black.
