Has anyone had driveshaft problems with the second engine driveshaft on this locomotive? Is anyone still running this locomotive now that most engine’s have sound? This engine has small flanges so I know it’s a newer loco. Is there a simple fix for this problem?
A little more information will be helpful. Just asking about “problems” is pretty generic and makes useful responses difficult. What do you mean by driveshaft? Do you mean the coupling in between the electric motor and the axle drive?

Does the engine run at all, has the coupling broken, or is something binding?

By the “second” engine, I assume you mean the rear one closest to the cab.

I have one of these locomotives, but I have only ever test run it. It does not run near as well as my Bachmann EM1 2-8-8-4, and it is also decorated which makes repainting more of a project.

I agree with Kevin, a picture would be a big help. I’m very familiar with the Rivarossi Articulateds but not the Challenger. I have over twenty Rivarossi Articulateds, I have remotored all but two and kitbashed six. Some now have a single Faulhaber 2224RS or a single Canon EN-22 and several have dual Canon EN-22s. I haven’t ever had a problem with drive shafts before or after doing a Mel overhaul.
I only bought one new, the rest were bought for restoration. Most off eBay, some at our local train shows.
They are all great runners and after adding 10 ounces of bird shot they are also great pullers with 5oz to 6oz of drawbar.

Thanks for the response. I do mean the coupling between the motor and rear drivers. I disassembled the engine because the rear drivers locked up. After replacing/ reassembly , the engine moved about two lengths and the rear drivers locked up again. I have not disassembled the engine to see if it came apart again. I assumed it did and put it away for anther day. I will post again when the engine is disassembled

After disassembling the engine I find that it is not a coupling problem, it is a number 3 driver that gets out of quarter. The two piece main rod allows the driver to rotate 180 degrees from 1&2.
