Rivers...update, i found the look i want!

Can some people post some pictures of rivers on thier layouts so I can get an Idea of how to model one. Mine didn’t come out like I wanted it to so I need to see some other peoples’ rivers so I can figure out what mine is missing.

Perhaps if you could tell us why yours didn’t turn out as expected, someone might be able to offer some help or suggestions.

I am also stuggling with what I feel is not a great look on my waterways. I think the big trick is how you set the base with colors. I can’t seem to get that down yet [:(!]

What exactly did you do on yours, that may help others give some hints or tips to how to adjust.

I tried the black in the middle and then blend to a dirt color on the out side and then used the woodland scienics stuff in the bottle, I thought the colors blended well without the “water” but after I poured it the colors didn’t seem blended anymore, and I just dont like the way it looks, and I need to get this blending down, or I was also thinking about just taking some tiny brown and tan rocks and putting them down and pouring “water” over that to see if it looks ok.

I have a little pond I am trying to do, wanting to get it right before I attack the slag lake for my power plant, I think I have ripped it out 3 x not happy with the reults. I am also using the Realistic water from WS. I have been having problems with bubbles appearing? Not sure why, as I am very careful pouring and don’t think I am injecting any when I am pouring or handling the bottle. As for the color blends, I noticed one pour I did, an all black worked the best. but I was doing a very small area, the river I am sure is more indepth. Good luck, post your picture when you have it. I have all the faith in your skill sets. Seen your work so far [tup]

I still would like to see some pictures, I know people have rivers on their layouts, I am not the only one!

Adam,

Check out this guys layout, one of the best ones I have seen besides Lance who does the n scale Monon.

that helps alot, thank you, keep them coming people.

I hate to free ride on another’s post, but I have a relative question. I am modeling a mountain stream with rocks and some white water. Shouldn’t I use a different base color than black…maybe gray or gray/blue??

Also, I plan to use Envirotex instead of WS water. Many have told me they got much better results with less headache.

Dont consider it a free ride, you are actually helping, i can use as many different techniques and color combinations as possible.[:D]

It’s all about getting it to look right. It also depends on the “depth” that you want.
Rex is right about the black. Black is good if you are doing a pond or slow, wide river.
But the black needs to have greys and browns blended with it to get the right look.

If you look at a real creek or river, there are deep holes along the outside banks when
the river bends. These are caused by the current washing out the bottom. Also, in the
middle of a river, the water appears darker. Along the banks will usually be lighter.

You will just have to experiment until you get the result you are looking for. Just have fun
it and don’t pour the water 'til it’s right… it’s to late after that. Good luck, Dave

I was surfing the forum and found a link to hminky’s layout…

Thank you for visiting my website.

Glad that the link helped

You had a page on how you made a really muddy mud puddle. I tried to find that link but couldn’t. That was yours wasn’t it?

Just visited your site and thank you for some very good ideas

About half way down hminky’s home page is a link to how he made the “runoff puddle”. I am putting a link to the home page because there is just so much good stuff here that I wouldn’t want anyone to miss this stuff. Here’s the link;

Hi Adam,
Looking at your layout site, you are a skillful modeler.
Modeling water is getting the right colors to give the depth you want. I use matte medium to model water, I find it easy and safe to use. I use acrylic black and dark blue paints to color the base to give depth and slowly feather the colors with whites/ochre towards the banks.
The book “How to build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery” by Dave Frary has a very good chapter on doing water scenery.
