Hi everyone I am trying to find out just what tool is used to replace rivets on coupling’s.
As the rivets I got do not have the long metal piece that snaps off after fixing the rivet into place.
I have S5102 rivets
And dose it come with different size rivet settings for Brass rivets. I did see one on a web site they wanted over $100.00 so I gave that a miss. But I am not sure if it was I was looking for.
What scale? What brand name? From what I was able to find out, those rivets you reference are for products by Hornby of England. Is this what you have?
I use them for G-scale models, where they are called Ferrules, not rivets – but I don’t use or have a tool to make them into rivets.
If I needed to, I’d probably just use the end of a large nail or try a hand-held paper punch.
There are many companies selling rivets and rivet tools on the Internet, but most of the rivet tools I could find are for mass production purposes and would be too expensive for what you need.
It would help if you could describe your situation a bit more specifically. You mention “couplings”. By that do you mean “couplers” i.e. the devices used to link train cars together.
Are these rivets functional - in other words are they acting as pivot points or for locking parts together? Or are they surface details as one poster suggested? (I suspect that they are functional).
As has been said, identifying the scale would be good as well.
Pictures would say a thousand words! If you don’t know how to post pictures go to this post:
My experience with HO scale rivets was with a steam loco where rivets were used to link the side rods together. The replacement rivets had a hole drilled into the tail end. I used a scratch awl to very gently flare the tail ends. The trick is to avoid using too much pressure so the rods can pivot freely on the rivet.
There are lots of people on these forums willing to help but the onus is on you as the ‘asker’ to make your question as clear as possible.[:D]
