Good Afternoon Folks,
This winter at the Railroad Museum of Long Island we have been working on our newest exhibit, the Historic Lionel Visitor’s Center Layout, opened in April of 2011 after being relocated from the Lionel Chesterfield MI. Offices. To date we have:
Inspected and repaired all locomotives, ready to run
- All of the layout accessories have been maintained and repairs, replacements and rewiring have been accomplished where necessary
- New exhibit cabinet installed telling the story of the move to Riverhead from MI.
- The room itself has been painted two final coats of white with green trim
- Improved (brighter) lighting system around the layout
- Lift bridge replaced with girder bridges to improve the view of the **** gate Bridge
- Track work, with the addition of the wiring of two insulated blocks made up of track 4 and track 6. Track 4 will also have train running on it this year
- Many switches have been replaced
- The control panel is in the process of being completely rebuilt from scratch, enabling us to lift it up and work under it.
- We are also right now in the process of replacing all of the activation switches for the accessories with heavy duty ones. They will also now be on the side of the layout, rather then on top which just gave the temptation of touching things to little fingers that much greater
Progress and photos can be viewed on the museum’s blog at the following links below:
