road bed ideas

I am in the research phase for my layout. I am going to be using O27 tubular track. I am going to use some ties that were recommended from 3r (very happy with sample).

I would like to get some roadbed and would like to see what is out there. I have used cork before but would like to try something different. I sent away for a sample of Homabed and it is not what I would like to use. I saw an item at Scenic Express that I will get a sample of as well. Are there any other choices I should look at in that style?

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest either the cork or the Woodland Scenics foam. The good part about the foam, it is available in a 25 foot roll. Although it can be a tad cantankerous to put down on tighter curves.

I have had good luck with the foam. Used pins to hold it in place on curves. Isplit it and laid the inside of the curve first.

I’m currently using the WS foam on a module I’m building. I like the fact that it stays somewhat flexible, so if something disturbs it during transporting/set-up, there will probably be less chance of loosing a chunk of ballest. I’m also using their foam glue for the bed and tracks…no nails or screws. Joe

I have also used roofing tile that I’ve cut to fit - but my layout is more stylized than realistic.

I will send away for a sample of WS.

Thanks

Let me throw out another option that exists: Vinylbed. It is available from vinylbed.com.

I used it on my N scale layout and absolutely loved the stuff. You need to order it in batches, thus if you find out you are 2 feet short you must order another case or else use something else. However, I think there is no other product out there like it. Much like foam, it is soft and deadens sound. But, unline foam, it doesn’t have as much “give” which might be important for heavier O scale trains. And, it is a one piece install, so you can outline your track without having to connect the center dots and split the pieces and … Actually, in thinking about that, I am not sure how well it would go around sharp turns. I know I bent it easily to my N SCALE curves, and have read online of Lionel Layouts that used it, so I know it works. Is it for you? Just write away for a sample and find out!

And no, I don’t work for them. Just enjoy their products!
