road size

ok my boards painted and glued ,tracks all laid ,siding and all .now its time to do my street .my layout has a setup for a street to come across one end then go down the middle ,and curve off the layout .from above it would look like a capital J , i used straight rerailers to set up the crossings ,because theres three main lines there ,and one point theres a crossing over one siding i got from a Lhs ,the gate go downs and stuff.the street measurement on the prefab crossing is narrower than the rerailers .my question is how wide is a two lane raod (traffic in both directions) .second question the crossing gate came with some dinky plastic cars ,and there not much smaller than kids hotwheels cars ,are hotwheels cars to scale ,or the little smaller dinky ones ,and if not who makes some decent looking scale cars .

Usually I make my roads about 3 1/2 inches wide or if you go scale its best to just measure the road near your home. About the cars, most Hot Wheels, Matchbox, etc… are too large and are more suited toward S but occasionally you might find a truck or something that is close. Model Power, Busch, Trident, make decent cars, trucks, vans, etc… but you just have to look around for what you like.

For city roads 3 1/2 to 4" is fine. For countryroads, use 2 1/2 to 3". While the larger roads are probably more to scale, they take too much space and look odd as country roads (I use 2 1/2"). As we say, selective compression adds to realism and allows for more detail.
As far as any vehicles go, use HO scale only and add Classic Metal Works to the above list.
