Roadbed for turnouts

I think I might have finally figured out how to build a turnout roadbed without going the $4.95 for each one. I’ll let you be the judge if it looks ok for a first timers try. I just take the “A” side, the one nearest the mainline, and turn it over on its back …

so that the ‘square’ edges of the A and B pieces are still facing each other but now the outer beveled edge of the A side will match the side of the mainline cork. Then trim the B side at an angle to match the curve of the turnout and with a hobby knife trim away the angle of the outside edge of the A side so that the bevel will pretty much match the other cork.
This will be my first one so I hope that when its trimmed the best I can get it and the ballast is down that it will pass muster.
The track in the upper part of the photo will be cut because theres a bridge goin there and I’ll use MicroEngineering bridge track for it.
Any suggestions for doing it better much appreciated!

Darn, you mean I got it right? [:p] Maybe some of this model railroading is something like an old carpenter once told me about his trade. He said,
Ain’t nuthin to carpentry!
Just draw a line and saw to it
Bore a hole and peep through it!
There ya go!

Good job, loks good. No reason why that won’t work. I’ve never been too overly fussy with the turnouts, so long as there’s solid roadbed, and a beveled edge to help keep the ballast slope, once it’s ballasted you won’t know the difference. The same thing you did will work when it’s not a siding parallel to the main, just cut the A piece at an angle as well.
