Roadbed or not

My next layout is going to be strictly switching and I was wondering if
I would be breaking any modeling rules by not using any roadbed? My
thought was this-with roadbed I would have to buildup the structures so
that loading docks etc. would be the right height. Without roadbed no
problem. Any thoughts on this matter? Bob[8]

My entire yard is on a single layer. Technically, it is roadbed…it is 1/8" vinyl underlay, but all the track is on it. I did this to ensure that it was quiet. Still, I would have been just as happy in all likelihood had I merely glued it all to the plywood under the vinyl.

So, I would urge to you go ahead, Bob. Chances are your moves will be slow, less than 20 scale mph. Noise should not be a problem. Less so if you use latex caulking to fix the track segments in place. Go very light on any turnouts because they are the items of track that get yanked most often for any number of reasons.

Nope, the only rules are what you want to do. Years ago MR featured a layout (maybe more than one) where the builder had laid track right on the plywood.

Switching lines/spurs tend to not have as much roadbed any way, so if you add a little ballast or dirt depending on the look you want you’ll be good to go.

Enjoy

Thanks for the information guys. It’s much appreciated. Bob

I use 3/32" or so of cork I got from a hobby/art store…like $6 for a 48"x36" or so piece… I got 2 and installed one under the switching area… I does dampen the sound some (mine is on a 3/4" plywood… I know, overkill, but the plywood was free!!!), but as others said, you may not need this since you will be going slowly.
