The refrigerated roadrailers that were used for perishables movement by UP to CSX westcoast/eastcoast service, are they being used still today? What has become of them?
…I can’t recall seeing any ref. units running through here on NS’s Triple Crown as I believe it’s mostly auto parts…
It was BNSF that bought the refrigerated RoadRailers, not UP. They ‘persuaded’ two of their large customers, Cliper Exxpress and Alliance Shippers, to buy some too.
As far as I know, the equipment is still in use as TOFC trailers hauling perishables. East of Chicago, it wouldn’t be on a RoadRailer train. It would be on a TOFC train.
From my experience with RoadRailers (and I’ve got more than most folks) RoadRailer only trains are not a viable transportation alternative outside of the small auto parts niche they’ve found on the NS.
