I am watching an empty coal unit train west bound now… seems to be working fine for me… although the sun angle is washing out the image pretty badly at this hour of the day!

Which URL are you using? I know of 3 different ways to access the camera view:

The best gives a full motion video in a large format using Windows Media Player. But this one consumes lots of bandwidth from your internet connection.

The next best gives a full motion video in a smaller window within the browser window. Being smaller, this one consumes less bandwidth from you internet connection.

The worst is a single frame per second (jumpy video) in a small format using Windows Media Player. This one consumes the least bandwidth from your internet connection.

I bet your method is the 3rd one here (supplied via Trains dot com). It does seem to be down at the moment.

Hello Semper V:

Thanks for the explanation, I think you are correct in your analysis that I am linked to teh 3rd method mentioned. Yes, I see the washout when the sun is in the west.

Go to the original thread about the Roanoke Rail Cam and on page 76 of that thread you will find a discussion of the various methods of accessing the Roanoke (Hotel) Rail Cam, including the links to each of them.

(I think I interchanged methods 2 and 3 in my previous reply in this thread compared to the discussion in the above link… Not that the methods have some inherant numbering to them, it is just how my brain happened to work this time!)

Wet day in Roanoke . It was snowing there recently . My wife and I are going through there next weekend . I hope to be able to find time to do the museums . RON
