Sorry, can’t give you any first-hand advice because I never railfanned in Roanoke. Unless I’ve totally lost my marbles, TRAINS had a “RR Hot Spots” article a year or two ago with a diagram of the trackage and main highways in Roanoke, along with other points of interest.
Did spend most of a day in Roanoke, at the O. Winston Link museum in the former N&W railroad station and at the VA Museum of Transportation. Both are well worth your time.
