You’re in for a treat - you’re missing a couple really nice articles featuring his work:
October, 1989 had an article about his first layout - 3’ x 11’.
The title of the article was “Dear Rick… We share a friendly letter about a very nice HO layout”.
December 1990 - March 1991 contained an MR project layout that he authored - creating the “Port of Los Angeles”. It was very good. He created a 2.5’ x 6’ HO module.
These, plus the most recent weathering article are the only ones I have.
About a year ago there was an MRC article he did about detailing a switcher, I believe.
He’s one of my favorite modelers. His stuff just always looks right.
Check out the MR magazine index - just search for Smaus. Lots of good stuff.
Within the last year I recall an MR article on using “landscaping illusions” to effectively hide some things in a background. He showed the bridge over his yard with the flour mill and the illusion of the yard under the bridge with a different backdrop for the bridge itself. I consider these types of techniques unique and it is why I always look forward to his articles.
He did one in the nineties on different paving materials for streets, parking lots, etc. I believe these were featured from his old lay out. They were of great interest to me as I was just getting aquainted with urban scenery. I will try to get the magazine and month.
He also had an article in the July 1989 Model Railroader “Paint Shop” on SPFE’s new (at that time) white paint scheme with the circular logo. It included a way to simulate a Hydra-Cushion cylinder.
