Just a reminder.
Lots of stuff going on there.
Maybe next year. This year I’m saving my pennies for Owosso.
4 of the Heritages units on display! Man, I was just up there three weeks ago, wish I had waited[:O][|(]
Let’s see…June 5, I have to work.
June 6, I have to work.
June 7, I have to work, followed by a birthday party for two of my grandkids.
I hope that my work will make it worthwhile for people who can go, though, in terms of properly-classified westbound manifest freights. Have fun, and be safe around our property. (What’s BNSF doing, by the way?)
I took a drive out to Rochelle this afternoon and was a little disappointed. The flyer on the Rochelle web site said TRAINS was going to be there (at least that’s what it looked like to me), but no TRAINS. There were a couple of vendors selling “stuff” and snacks and the rail park parking lot was closed off even though there were lots of empty spaces. So I went over to the old C&NW passenger station where they had a small “Operation Lifesaver” tent display and then saw the highlight of my afternoon…U.P. had four of the “heritage” units in a very old siding. On display were the C&NW, MoPac, W.P. and S.P. units…they were relatively clean but inaccessible but for pictures and walkarounds. All in all a pretty disappointing afternoon except to see the U.P. units.
I noticed the 2 Salt Lake City Olympic units going through on the web cam earlier…

Yes, a fellow I spoke with at Rochelle while there yesterday told me I had missed those units by about an hour and a U.P. employee told me they would have been back westbound on another train later in the evening.
I went down to Rochelle on Friday night just to see how the units were sitting. The four Heritage locos were sort of parked in bad spot, but once the sun swung around to the north side, there were some images to be had. Of course if you waited until dark, you could control how the units were lit!

The UP employees did the best they could with how the units were sitting–I know some of them and they are railfans too, but with all the MOW supplies in that area, there wasn’t much they could do. Maybe next year will work out a bit better with some advance planning.
The Olympic units went east on Friday night about 6 pm leading a stack train–they are in the G3 to Chicago shuttle pool.

I was there early Saturday pm. The units looked great, but photography access was lousy. Could only back up 10 feet on the north. The south side was cluttered with MOW stuff.
I don’t know where else in Rochelle they could have been parked though.
I should, also, report that UP had a presence. BNSF, didn’t. Unless I missed it.
You are correct in that BNSF had zero participation in the event…hurray for U.P.!
