Rochelle Speed Limit

Can anyone tell me what the maximum authorized speed is for trains traveling through Rochelle, IL where the webcam is viewing?

From what I know BNSF’s limit is 35 mph. And I’m guessing UP’s is around the same. By the way congrats on your first star! [:D] Dave

BNSF is 35 through the city and UP is 30 I think. At night the speeds seem to increase but I dont know. I recall seeing a sign for UP that said 30 though but it seems to be that you never see trains go that fast anymore with Global 3 being so close with trains going in and out.

I was out at the Rochelle railfan park recently and found a crew working on the diamonds (welding, grinding, etc.). They had a third guy stationed at the small shack just west of the diamond watching or listening on the radio for trains and he would sound a loud alarm and acativate blue warning strobes when a train was approaching the diamonds to alert the crew who could not hear or see the train coming due to the noise of their grinding operations…pretty cool and very good idea.

UP’s speed limit is also 35 across the diamond.

Do they actually go faster at night?? Or is it just me cause the UP seems to fly by at night.

Thanks for the replies and the star mention! I noticed for the 1st time the other day, with the sun glaring on the rails, I could see a spur or siding track coming off of the BNSF main near the bottom left, which, I hadn’t noticed before.

I have the DVD of Rochelle and they were grinding and welding then too. You would have figured they would have finished by now [:D]!

The spur goes off to an industrial park. I think it is the Libby Plant (I can’t remember) but it is switched by both railroads. There is some footage on the DVD of the local backing into the building (both locos disappear inside) and emerging with a cut of cars.
