Rochelle UP expansion

How far from the web cam is the new UP yard expansion ? It would be interesting to have a cam available to watch the expansion.

From what I could decipher from the maps and diagrams I’ve looked at, Global III will be on the south side of the main, about a mile up the line from the webcam.

Maybe someone could mount a 360-degree controllable cam on top of the Del Monte, so that you could swing around and see the new place.

The UP has some info on their website regarding the new ramp.

Here’s one to ponder. Its 58 miles from GLO-III to Elmhurst (Global II). If you are a Chicago area shipper/consignee, do you want to pick up the tab to have your load drayed from Rochelle to the Chicago area? @ approx $1.20/mile? Will the UP reduce their haulage rate on trains into GLO-III by an off-setting $70? Doubtful. Its a new ramp, they’ll need premium prices + longer drays. I suspect you’ll see some empty parking spots at GLO-III for a long while.

They would need a telephoto lens. That Del Monte complex is pretty big and has its own set of switch and staging tracks with access from both the BNSF and UP.

They tried to locate it closer in to the city around Elburn but the NIMBY’s kept them from purchasing the land. Rochelle was more than happy to get the extra jobs and income the yard will generate.

Don’t quote me on this but looking at the web cam and if I remember what I’ve read correctly, the new facility is going to be behind the Del Monte building out of the web cams sight. The Del Monte building is the building directly in the background of the web cam. You may be able to see some of it, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

You won’t see any of it from the current web cam. It is past the diamond, around the bend and about a mile up the line.

I think that UP might have lucked out a bit with Global-III. By locating it in Rochelle, it moves them closer to the Quad Cities. Between this and their KC facility, they have the state of Iowa pretty well covered.
