Rock Island strike in 1948?

This goes way back, but in the summer of 1948, my sister and I went from McAlester, OK to Los Angeles, CA to spend summer with our Aunt and Uncle. I was 12 yrs old and she was 10. We traveled on the RI/SP on a pass. This was a through train that the SP picked up in Tucumcari, NM. I remember that for some reason we could not return on the same route, even though our pass was made out that way. I think it had something to do with the RI but am not sure what. We went LA to El Paso with instructions for me to call home for the itinerary for the rest of the trip home. I believe we left El Paso for Houston and then caught the Katy (my father worked for the Katy) north to McAlester. Any ideas out there? A wreck maybe?

There was a National Strike shortly after WW2. I think there is a video about it in our archives but dont recall exactly.

There was a switchman’s strike in June-July 1950.

There was an accident on April 14, 1948, but it was in Kremlin, OK, which would not have affected your trip, and besides, the date seems too early.
