Rock trains - where do they operate in your part of North America?

A subject near and dear to my heart ! A partial listing (not much time before heading out to work this AM, more later):

  • The ill-starred Milford-Bennington RR in New Hampshire
  • NS’ move from Birdsboro, PA to Delaware with sand coming back as written up in Trains a year or two ago
  • A similar move from Wimpey Materials in Annville, PA on NS to ???
  • A similar move from Reading on the Reading & Northern to southern NJ, as written up in Railway Age about 10 - 15 years ago
  • Nittany & Bald Eagle (SEDA-COG line) - Glenn O. Hawbaker quarry move in north-central PA
  • Providence & Worcester - Tilcon move in Connecticut (and maybe some adjoining states) - might also go to Long Island ?
  • R. J. Corman in Kentucky, also written up in Trains recently

Check with Roy Blanchard, too.

The recent crummy economy - especially affecting construction markets - may have scaled back or put some of these operations on hold for a few years.

Finally, don’t forget John Kneiling’s article:

How to make money hauling gravel - A tale of three trains”
by Kneiling, John G., from Trains, January 1975, p. 36

  • Paul North.
