I drove the golden spike!. Now, when I send a train out, it comes back! I have 50’ of 2’-3’ wide N scale with an 81/2" rise (and back down of course). I have a gorge and mountains. I have roughed in my mountains with blue foam and am going to plaster cloth the foam.It seems like I need about 50 large Woodland Scenic type rocks.
So my question is – how do apply all these rocks? What do I do about the seams between rocks? Should I glue the rocks to the blue foam or should I apply plaster cloth, then glue the rocks.

When I was at that stage I placed them, Then I got a spoon full of celluclay that I mixed with a generous amount of white glue and put the glob where the casting was and then mash the casting into the glob. Then I took a fork and made the “earth” consume the edges that were to be under ground. Let it dry Long time but it worked for me. Paint and foam.

I dig holes in the foam to get the look I want. I do not cover my foam with plaster cloth. It saves money, time, and I can carve a better look. I do sometimes put a coat of ground goop on the foam for color and texture.
I then glue the rocks in with WS low temp hot glue and fill around with more ground goop.
Congrates on getting the track work in.
I cover my foam with Sculptimold(SM) which dries very slow. I push and wiggle the rocks into the wet SM till I like the look. I then smooth the SM around the base of the rocks to hide the seams. Paint, stain and ground foam will hide the rest.

You can do the same with plaster if you work fast.
Pilot,
I know this does not answer much, but FYI you might want to check this out.
We started with the foam and plaster cloth, but changed to www.bragdonent.com foam hardshell and foam rocks. You have about 30 minutes working time, and if you change your mind, a hairdryer will soften it so you can rework it. You use a hot glue gun to attach the hardshell and rocks.

For small rocks, I just stick them in the ground goup.
