Rode The Canadian To The West Coast.

Here is a Rocky Mountaineer story. Wade, the baldy in the video is a family member that we see two or three times a year. He always has great train stories to tell around the dinner table. My kids actually look forward to his stories more than I do.

Hi, Brent

I had the opportunity to ride (actually, I worked as a private car steward) The Super Continental back in 1974! Oh to be able to relive THAT experience!

I made a little video of it converted from my Super8 movies… Enjoy!

Thanks, Ed

The Canadian is a fantastic trip, and is very affordable if you book using an Express Deal - http://www.viarail.ca/en/deals - or using their regular 50% off sales.

If you are looking for the cheapest way to get across Canada, it’s not for you. But I suspect most people on this list wouldn’t mind paying a bit more to ride a classic streamliner instead of being squished into a tin can for five hours. The Canadian still has sections, roomettes, bedrooms and drawings rooms just like it did in 1955. Literally just like it - they are the same cars, same cushions (restuffed and recovered), same seats, etc.

VIA’s very existence is seriously under threat right now. There is a possibility that this train will be sold and replaced by a high-priced “Rocky Mountaineer” type train in the next few years. The fare differences between the Rocky Mountaineer and VIA are enormous. Using Express Deals I got my own double bedroom from Toronto to Winnipeg for just over $500 - that’s two accommodations for one person with all my meals included for three nights. The cheapest Rocky fare for one night is close to $1000. If The Canadian is ever privatized, you can get that $500 ticket I got will cost more like $4000.

When you travel in sleeper class, all the meals are included. All the food is prepared fresh on board and the dining car is like a 4-star restaurant. It’s not top of the top, but it’s very, very nice. And you’re on the train!

I’ve met a lot of model railroaders who haven’t taken a train in 30 years or more. If you live in North America, here is a 1950s streamliner transcontinental that is metaphorically in your back yard. Go book your tickets!

Ed.

Enjoyed the video and I see you have some others I’ll have to check out. My grand father got one of those wind up movie cameras in the 50s and I had all the home movies put on DVDs. Lot’s of train shots, Including one where he is in the car pacing a steam engine across the Manitoba prairie at quite a pace. I think I will try and put some of those on my You-Tube page. You can never have too much steam on You-Tube.
