Rolling Stock Rosters

I am interested in what rolling stock you own. Specifically the quantities of the different types of cars.

Here is my n scale car. I am just starting my n scale layout so I don’t have much yet.

Maine Central:

1 Gondola

Here are my HO scale cars. They were all given to me so there is a big variety.

Penn Central:

1 Caboose

Santa Fe:

1 Box Car

CSX:

1 Box Car

Virginian:

1 Hopper

Western Maryland:

1 Flat Pipe Car

Delaware & Hudson:

1 200 Ton Crane

1 Tender (for the crane)

I currently have on the layout:

  • 1 DRGW 36 ft. Boxcar
  • 1 BWTC 36 ft. Boxcar, kit
  • 1 Soon to be labeled BWTC Stock car, kit
  • 3 BWTC logging disconnects, kits
  • 1 BWTC Logging Caboose, kit
  • 1 BWTC Bobber Caboose
  • 1 DRGW (? not looking at it now) Flatcar
  • 1 Roadless Billboard Boxcar, kit
  • 1 scratch built BWTC shorty flatcar (monodirectional, only one coupler, used for service runs, not for scheduled trains)

Those are the cars which I have on the layout right now; I have a few more, including passenger cars, which I dont a) need, b) have space for on the layout. Thus, my roster. Dont forget to visit my website!

Too many to list individually. Between boxcars, reefers, gondolas, hoppers, tankers, flat cars, and cabooses: ~100 pieces. ~10% still need to be built. Of the 100: 55% NYC, 45% other roads.

I deliberately set out to obtain 1/700th of the freight roster of my prototype as it existed in the time frame I chose to model.[dinner] Since the railroad (Nihon Kokutetsu) was a national monopoly in 1964, there wasn’t much choice of road names.[:-^] As a result, I have dozens of box cars and gondolas, about a dozen flat cars (had to get extras, since my prototype area shipped logs and rough-sawn timber) and somewhat fewer tank cars and reefers.[8D] There are also a choice collection of brake vans and `whatever’-brakes, including a stock-brake (AKA pig car, aka cruel and unusual punishment for the rear end crew.)[+o(] One-offs include auto racks and a couple of different designs of container cars (JNR standard containers, five to a car.)[swg]

Then there’s the Tomikawa Tani Tetsudo, which runs a motley collection of JNR hand-me-downs.[:$] It’s also home to some wild feats of imagineering - articulated hopper cars kitbashed from US prototype hoppers, hopper-brakes of no known ancestry and some ??? MOW cars.[alien]

When rivet counters come to call, I point out that they are from the Neil Armstrong universe, while I am modeling the Alfred E Neumann universe. What, me worry?[(-D]

Chuck (Modeling Central Japan in September, 1964 - my way)

What are MOW cars? I must be stupid because I have seen that term used a lot but I have no idea what it means.

MOW = Maintenance of way

Tom,I have to many to post by road name.

So,I will name some.

Boxcars,BN,CR,NS,AD&N,PD RR,CHTT,CSX,Chessie,NOPB GWS,SSDK,OP&N,SF,RG,SOO,Sandersville,G&W,D&H,D&M,KCS,CN,CP,WCRC,Railbox between home and the club,I would say around 250.

Gons: IHB,BN,Chessie,Railgon,BVRY.

Flat cars…As of now 2.Both U.P.

Reefers,PFE.

Covered Hoppers,Most embarrassing I have twenty and all are lessors except for 1 Chessie,2,RG,S&E

Tanks cars…GATX,UTLX, ADM and slurry tank cars like JMH.Around 20.

My collection is small with much potential for growth. My goal for the future is to have a nice long, like 75-car, freight train to run at clubs, shows or the like in addition to my passenger train.

The roster as of now, as best I can recall without going through my things:

4-boxcars

6-tank cars

1-flat

7-hoppers

1-caboose (I’d like more!)

4-stock cars (none in great shape right now)

3-reefers

Alvie

A rough estimate…

Boxcars in the two hundreds

Tank cars around 50ish

Cylindrical Grain Hoppers around 50ish

Flat cars around 20

Gondolas around 50ish

Open top hoppers around 10, mostly ballast hoppers.

Cabeese around 50ish

Intermodal cars around 10ish

I’m sure there is more I’m missing…

It’s one thing to list a roster of loco’s but another do list rolling stock. I haven’t even attempted to enumerate my roster but can think of a few things:

running out of steam, no pun intended…

At last count, last night, I have 282 freight cars of various shapes, sizes & uses with varying liveries too numerous to state seperately.

I obviously do NOT have a nice balanced fleet. My cataloged collection is as below. I started cataloging in 1997 so anything obtained before that time is not counted plus I got about 100 box cars about a year ago I never logged in. Approximately:

Freight (755)

Box 266 - 35%
Open Hoppers 55 - 7%
Gondola 22 - 3%
Covered Hopper 67 - 9%
stock 126 - 17%
Flat 36 - 5%
TOFC 12 - 2%
Tank 74 - 10%
Reefer 81 - 11%
Ore Cars 3 - 0%

Caboose - 52 - 7%

Passenger (367)

RPO 7 - 2%
Express/Baggage 37- 10%
coach 71- 19%
sleeper &nbs

This is what is currently active on my layout:

24 locomotives

47 autoracks (45 Walthers, 2 Atlas articulated)

10 boxcars

7 cabooses

21 covered hoppers

12 cushion coil cars

17 piggyback cars (6 89-foot flatcars, 8 front runners, and 3 impack cars)

Also have 31 piggyback trailers for the piggyback cars

5 gondolas

1 hopper

62 TripleCrown RoadRailers (40 are built for rail service, and I have 2 couplermates)

1 tanker

22 Amtrak passenger cars

I don’t have half of what some on here may have, but I really have to many to list here…
