Rolling Thunder

Hey Guys, Check out the demonstration of Broadway Limited’s new “Rolling Thunder” sound accessory, plus a sneak peak at another sound accessory.

Did add a lot to the sound, despite the less than woofer size of the speakers on the computer. Would be interesting to actually hear it set up on a layout.

Have fun,

Richard

I agree, my small PC speakers did not show much difference; guess I will have to wait for a big train show to hear the real thing. But still too much $$$$$ for my budget.

I sent BLI a suggestion about their thunder and lightning concept that is shown in the second half of the video. In the video the lightning and the thunder occur at the same time. That is only realistic if the storm is in the immediate vicinity. Most of the time there is a pause between the flash and the bang, and the length of the pause is determined by how far away the storm is. I suggested to BLI that they should consider adding in a timing option so that the modeler could increase or decrease the time between the lightning and the thunder.

Any opinions on my suggestion?

As I am writing this, it also occured to me that there should be the ability to vary the time between flashes so that the storm can be made to look more or less intense.

I quite like the lightning and thunder storm sound effects.

I liked the deep bass of the Rolling Thunder. Having that vibration as a big locomotive and train passes is neat. HOWEVER…one of the biggest complaints I’ve heard about having sound on the layout is how it’s too loud so maybe the additional bass and vibration may not be something that will appeal to many.

I love sound and have had sound since Lambert and Modeltronics units back in the early 1970s. I have to admit I have my Tsunamis turned down where they are not nerve wracking when several engines are working. It can get overwhelming otherwise even for my sound loving friends.

I haven’t seen the Thunder/Lightning demo yet but I have to agree with making them variable so they represent storms far away as well as close up. This may really be something to have.

BLI responded very quickly to my suggestion about the thunder and lightning system.

This is what Matt explained:

Hi Dave,

For cost reasons, it will probably work like this: there will be 4 to 6 loops of thunder and rainstorm playing constantly and randomly. Then there will be four to six loops of loud thunder & lightning strike which will play when the user presses the button. Upon button press, the software will randomly select one of those 4 (5/6?) thunder & lightning sequences to play.

We are trying to keep the MSRP below $100.
