Today, I would like to wish Ronald Reagan happy birthday. He is 93 years old. I think we should offer our prayers for him and Nancy Reagan. With his terrible memory loss, he and his family definitely deserve our prayers.

Seeing how this forum is turing into politics and other non-train-topics are we gonna see the Reagan bashers in here too? Maybe to keep this train-related we could talk about any movies he’s been in with trains or maybe his 1984 re-election train special? I’m reading about in this book called “The President Travels By Train.” Did anybody get to see it and what was it like? Where’s the pullman he rode in now? My dad remembers another presidential train, the Eisenhower funeral train when came back to Abilene in 1969.

Amazing, he is still alive at 93 but sent my 22 year old son to die in Beirut in 1983. This isn’t political Mr Ironhorseman just heavy annoyance with Commanders-in-Chief who have never seen, nor wanted to, the Elephant.
Despite having very little political or administrative smarts, and disasterous economic policy,…Ronald Reagan will be remembered as a great President.
Why? Because he was a great actor, a “face man”, a central focus to distract our attention while the “button and lever” men pulled the switches behind the scenes.
Maybe we should consider adopting a political paradigm similar in concept to England,with their figurehead queen,…etc.[%-)]
Yes, those of us who admire him are all dupes. We know nothing. We were all just taken in by his acting.
I always felt very comfortable with him as President. It took me a while to figure out why.
We’re both from small Illinois towns, away from Chicago. There’s 40 years difference in our ages, but those towns we grew up in didn’t change that much in the first 3/5ths of the 20th Century. We were of the same culture and values. I believe he would have fit right in to one of our family reunions.
I know his foriegn policy certainly changed the world for the better. He said: “Mr. Gorbachov (SP?), tear down this wall.” And the wall came down. And millions tasted freedom.
I know his economic policies worked very well. What other President has had a college degree in economics?
I’m sorry your Marine son died in Lebanon. Those deaths tore Reagan apart. But he was trying to stop killing with those Marines. Trying to do the right thing.

I agree that President Reagan and his family, especially Nancy Reagan, deserve our prayers as do all people suffering from any sickness or disease and all family members and care givers.
He had good men working for him… Remember, he was always making blunders in the"first person", that he would “wriggle” out of later,…giving rise to the name “Teflon president”? Those maneuvers were his advisors work, he did have excellant advisors.
I thought Reagan was a great president too, back at the time, but being popular and being smart are not the same thing,…and Reagan was popular.
I lived in California from 1989-2003, and the memories are not all positive I assure you, he is just given a whole lot of slack because of his health misfortunes these last several years, no one wants to be seen beating up a sick old man.
As far as his Brilliant economic policies, does the name KEATING mean anything to you guys? How about the term “see through office buildings”? The two are related. Trying to stimulate the economy by putting the average construction workers back to work,they loosened up the FED to unprecedented levels, allowing just about anyone to borrow heavily for speculative developement of commercial buildings. Funny thing about “spec” is, eventually you gotta fill them up, or the lender comes to repo.
Big problem comes in when so many buildings have been repo’d, that the last thing the lender wants is yet another empty (hence “see thru”) office building, to go with the others they’ve already had to swallow. Lenders need pyment on account, to pay their investers, or hard assets they can swiftly liquidate . When all the lenders have buildings they need to swiftly liquidate, the market to sell such buildings really bottoms out, and the market goes bust.

Well, back in 1983, I was -1 years old, So you’ll have to excuse me if i don’t know much about him, No i don’t know if he was a crap presiodent or a really good one, All I do know is that he cant even recognize his own wife, According to CNN reports.
If i were around in that time, i’d tell you exactly how I felt about him, weather it offended anyone or not. But i’m sorry I don’t know much about him, But i do know he is suffering from Rapid memory loss, And does indeed deserve our prayers.

Annother thing that the nearly late and great president Reagan did for us is singlehandedly began destroying Organized Labor with his Air Traffic Controllers Strike antics. No tears in my eyes here for him! All I have to say is one thing…Happy Halloween agreement of '85.

Too many bad aftereffects of his style of government that still live with the current occupant of the Oval office. Someone recently said “Ronald Reagan proved deficits dont matter” Well someone should ask Bush 1 if deficits mattered in 1994. I recall that wasnt a very good year for him.
I think everyone realizes, not everyone will like every president,
However i agree with, If you didn’t vote, your not in a place to complain.
