Roofwalks on Boxcars

Hey Folks,

I am putting together a 40ft Branchline trains post war boxcar. Does anybody know what year roofwalks where removed? Just want to make sure it fits my time frame of late 40’s early 50’s.

Thanks!

They definately fit your era, roofwalks started to disappear in the mid 60’s, when the big 50 foot plug door boxcars came out with the flatter roof, however you didn’t have to remove them until the mid 70’s when the FRA made low mount brake wheels compulsory and all roof walks be removed, because some brakemen apparently got a head knock or two.

hope that helps

Actually, the first of those cars did have roofwalks. It was 1965, or possibly 1966, when they stopped putting roofwalks on boxcars. Even today, there are still a few boxcars and reefers with high brake wheels.
