I just found out that Zellers, here in Vancouver anyhow, is selling a rotary tool with some extras for $14. It will not be high powered but it will do the job. I have a dremel and a cheap one. The cheap one will bog down a bit when pressured, but for small jobs it is great.
I don’t know if the price will be the same all over, but I hoped that this will allow some of you to get rotary tool on the cheap. It is made by “Powersmith”.
As long as you realize it’s a “cheapo” fine. Use it where it may get banged, wet or otherwise damaged & you wont be out much. I work at Home Depot & we have a Ryobi kit with a flex shaft, stand, and 120 accessories for under $50 - the accessories are what will cost you if bought seperately! I’m on my second Dremel - the first one only lasted 30+ years!! Buy quality - it’s cheaper in the long run!![:D]
Another buy here in Canada is a similar tool at Canadian Tire, is on sale semi regularly. This week it’s $12.95. I bought one a while ago for $9.95. Seems like a good tool, rubber covered, nice and solid, lots of torque, variable speed. Comes in a plastic carrying case and some basic tools. I do have a Dremel (three, actually), but wouldn’t hesitate to recommend one of these, you can’t go wrong for the price.
I’ve had several knock-offs over the past 20 years and they’ve all found their way to the trash can. I’m still using my first Dremel, model #395, which I bought in 1983. The cheap-o’s (Black and Decker, Sears, etc) burned out under light stress, the Dremel is like the Energizer bunny. It keeps going and going and going …
Harbor tools belong there . . . . in the harbor!!! Never bought one myself, but have seen dozens that cheap co-workwers bought, used, had them die, or worse - injur them!! Buy cheap - get cheap! Again, quality tools are less expensive in the long run! Not only tools - did you ever hear of a Yugo?[xx(][:D]
Point being it is cheap. I think the more advanced of us know this. I stated as such as well. But not all of us have the money to get a dremel with all the extras. I know when I bought mine I had a lot more money then I do now.
I posted this for those who are under paid and over taxed. The working [and non-working] poor among us. It is cheap, but it does the job. Although not meant to be used like a high end rotary tool, it will still do the job for the hobbiest.
Anyhow, I still hope it was helpful to some of you.
You got to know your tools and knockoffs or less expencive can be great, could not live without my ryobi stuff from HD, their 18volt stuff is great (used their sawsall to cut out a window to square it up under preasure and it did not die am still using today).
Wally World had a $9.95 special on a B&D rechargable a couple of years ago and I bought it just as a companion to my Father’s Dremel. He died in 1959 by the way. Cloth covered cord ! All the chucks and tools are interchangable. Anyway everyone said it wouldn’t last, but so far it is still rolling along. I bought a spare battery and I have to say so far I am well satisfied for the price.
That crummy Dremel died last Spring and I haven’t bought another one !
