hello everyone! i am on the good part of my layout… the TurnTable…now all i need is a good round house. does anyone know of a good roundhouse? i am looking too create a 6 or 7 or even 5 stall roundhouse. i looked at the atlas ones but the arent what i need. im looking for something good…
A word of caution, the spacing of the “slots” on your turntable will determine which roundhouse kits you may be able to use. If the “slots” are at thirty degrees, the stalls in your round house will probably need to be at thirty degrees.
The Atlas Cornerstone series 3-stall house went together very well, and looks good on my road. It has modules to add stalls, but they are steep. Not sure why you would say it isn’t good. Upon what do you base your opinion?
(14-3/8 X 15" X 4-5/8")
The basic 3-stall kit featrues brick detail, opening doors, stalls spaced at 15 degrees, an office, two styles of ventilators and modular constuction. Molded in appropriate colors, it is expandable with additional 3-stall kits as desired. Designed to work with Turntable #305 and Motor Drive #304."
I dont know if Walthers carry that one, but if they don’t then you will have no difficulty getting it from a mail-order/internet dealer in the UK. I have seen them on ebay from time to time, but I dont pay much attention as I am in N scale.
Euro Rail Hobbies is in Canada, they have amazing stock and the fellow who runs the place is very knoweldgable and the service is excellent. The European products may also be available from http://eurolokshop.com/index.html but they dont have as well organised a web site.
It depends on whether you want one with a highly detailed interior or just a shell with doors. In the relatively cheap category are Walthers, Heljan, and Atlas, all of which have kits for additional stalls. If you want to spend some bucks, South River Model Works has issued some outstanding plaster kits in the past. I bought their brick roundhouse several years ago. It has a brick interior floor with service pits, inside wood framing, and exterior structures and details. Their kits are limited run so this one is probably out of production but you might check out whether they have another kit currently available.
I’m detailing the inside of my Atlas HO roundhouse this month. I’ve installed flat wood coffee stirrers for a floor, and I’ve scratched some bins and workbenches. I’ve got era-appropriate pin-ups for the walls, I’m putting in Walthers bumpers, and I’ll add some interior lighting, too. My LHS (Maine Trains in Chelmsford, MA) has one of these on their in-store layout. It’s beautifully weathered and detailed, which showed me that it’s possible to make a very nice model out of this kit. Takes a bit of work, or maybe it’s play? I get those confused some times.
