Roundhouse 4-6-2 Pacific

Looks like it has many hold-overs from older 1898 locomotives. Sort of a stretched 4-4-0 with a “modern” cab.

One flaw in the Genesis version of the USRA light Pacific was that it had a Delta trailing truck, something the original USRA engines didn’t have and that was found only on copies of the USRA design which usually had other significant differences. It’s hard to be sure but it looks like the illustrations on the Roundhouse Web page show a Cole trailing truck, which would be correct for the light USRA 4-6-2.

Only the Atlantic Coast Line, Baltimore & Ohio, and Louisville & Nashville received original USRA light Pacifics. These three roads also ordered copies, as did the Grand Trunk Western and the Mobile & Ohio. The ACL’s copies had 69-inch drivers for dual service, instead of the 73-inch drivers of the originals. The B&O’s copies and the GTW’s had the Delta trailers, and the B&O’s came with Vanderbilt tenders.

So long,

Andy

I sent an e-mail to Athearn a few months ago regarding re-issuing the old Roundhouse kits as I also thoroughly enjoy the 2-6-2 Prarie kits I built. The response from Athearn was that they have no intention of re-issuing these kits. BUMMER!

You asked the wrong question. You should have asked if the 4-6-0, 4-4-2, 2-8-0, 2-6-2 would be resurrected in RTR form. Given that the old tooling is fully amortized, there’s no reason why it can’t be upgraded fairly cheaply and production resumed in RTR form.

The fact that the old-timers were only re-issued in RTR form should have been a major clue.
