I tried this on the O & S gauge forum, with no response. I want a roundhouse for my AF layout, and can’t find much, has anyone started with an HO roundhouse kit and expaned it to fit S trains?
I have read about increasing the height of an HO roundhouse by adding a 1/2 inch foundation, and adding on to the back of the structure for depth.
Has anyone made these kind of alterations, or is it better to start with an O guage unit and cut it down? Any ideas of a particular kit to work with would be great.
Well my first thought is: if you are going to all this trouble to alter a pre-designed kit to fit your situation -why not simply built it yourself? The main problem that you are going to have is the fact that I use, (and was brought up on), differing definitions for the scale you mention.
‘0’ is 7mm scale, ‘H0’ is 3.5mm scale. ‘S’ is, (I believe), 1/64th scale, (we would call 5mm scale), and although I have never seen it -it does work out as closer to the UK std of ‘00’, (which is 4mm scale). Speaking as a former ‘00’ modeller, and parent of a devout 9 year old ‘00’ modeller -I would investigate sources of ‘00’ scale building materials.
Unless you start by slicing up two kits to make one round house, you will end up with an obvious difference in “building materials” that would show through the 5 ft rule. If you totally scratch build then you will not have the problems of “matching” the construction materials. I for one, would be afraid that the “accessories”, doors, windows, lights, chimney would end up being off scale, when scaling up from HO or even down from O.
Ok, I thank you both for your responses. I am not sure I am up to a scratchbuild, at least not without having some plans, and I haven’t been able to find any of those either.
I will go out in search of “OO” scale, and Ralph, you are correct, S is 1/64.
