Are Roundhouses and turntables used in modern day rail yards?
BNSF,has both in their yard,north of seattle,a person caNNOT,see from the road but when you take the EMPIRE BUILDER,to SPOKANE WASH, AS THE PASSENGER TRAIN PASSES THRU THE YARD ( MIDDLE),NOW IF THEY USE BOTH I DONT KNOW…AKA HUB
WE ARE GOING TO INSTALL THE LARGEST TURN-TABLE THAT ATLAS MAKE FOR O-GUAGE/SCALE,AT THE END OF OUR MAKE-UP YARD,WILL TAKE A MODULAR BY ITS SELF,WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE BIG BOY,OR ANYTHING THAT SIZE,SO WILL RUN THEM ALONG SIDE OF OUR ROUNDHOUSE>>>>>>>>>AKA HUB
I am sure there are still a fair number of turntables and roundhouses – turntables still have a valid use, less so for roundhouses which really were suited for working on steam locos.
Any facility that has a roundhouse and turntable is almost without question a rather old facility.
There is a small turntable at BNSF’s Eola (IL) yard that is not directly accessable but with a good lens you can get decent photos. The CN’s former Wisconsin Central (ex-Soo Line) yard in Stevens Point WI has, last time I was there, a magnificent old roundhouse from the 1880s plus turntable. At their facility in Fond du Lac WI they had a transfer table.

There is still, or was, a turntable and roundhouse in use by I&M Raillink in the Rock Island, Il area. The last time I past there and had the chance to stop, I took pictures of them turning an engine, and also of the roundhouse that was full( 6 stalls).
If you are using this info to plan a layout, you can always plan a “what-if” situation. That is, if you’re not modeling a scecific prototype.

Most modern facilities use a “wye” to turn locos although they don’t really need turning. A wye is about zero maintenance and can be used without help from an operator. A roundhouse was used to service and store steam power mostly because it took so much time and manpower to get it ready for a new run. When a diesel is done for the day just leave it idling, lock the cab, and come back tomorrow then sand it, fuel it, and run it. Any major breakdowns and refits are handled by huge regional or national rebuilders.

I SAW A TURNTABLE BEING USED,IN TACOMA MAKE-UP YARD ( TACOMA WASHINGTON) IS NOW BNSF,THEY USED,IT TO TURN A DIESEL,ENGINE,I DONT THINK THIS TABLE WOULD HANDLE A STEAM ENGINE,LOOKS TOBE TO SHORT… HUB
