Hey all,
I am in the process of rebuilding my Uncle’s 1951 Royal Blue. I have a can motor and an electronic e unit. The e unit is working fine, but the can motor is real loud and rough. It is a SNS trains motor and the worm gear doesnt look right.
I have a Timko motor with a flywheel that runs a lot better, but the flywheel rubs against the horizontal brace in the cab. Would a Timko without a flywheel be better?
I also got a new chassis, drilled a hole in the boiler for smoke and then drilled a new hole in the smoke unit a bit further back so the holes would match up. Smoke unit works great with no change in performance.

Sounds like a great project. Both Krylon and Valspar make a bue that is dead on match.
Is the paint called Royal Blue? I found a Royal Blue by Rustoleum, but it doesnt look dark enough.

I got it at Lowes a few years back
Our Lowes does not have it, so I’ll look around at other places. If I cant find it, I can get a good repro color from Portlines, but its 22 bucks a can.
You may want to go to Walmart Lowes or other places that sell paint in rattle cans and see what gets close enough. I’ll check to see if the paint is still good and if it is you can have what is left in the can I have.

Well, I have it painted now. I went ahead and spent the cash for the paint from Portlines. I must say it is very nice paint. I probably spent as much trying other paints that said they were Royal Blue, but were not.
I used a prewar tender shell because I thought it looked better.
Got a nice connector for the smoke and light to run directly from the tender trucks.
Finished the decals and installed the trucks and e-unit on the tender chassis.
Well, I am pretty much finished. I was having trouble getting the rivets for the valve gear to set properly, so I used a couple of small brass machine screws. I am going to fillin the slits and paint the heads blue.

Yep, I am looking for a scratched up set of New Haven passenger cars to repaint. Don’t know why Flyer didnt make a postwar set of those for the Royal Blue.

I think you’ve got the eccentric crank set wrong. The picture seems to me to show that it’s only about 45 degrees from the main crank and that it is even below the railhead. It should be 90 degrees from the main crank.
