Sounds like Hunter Harrison has been keeping the bean counters busy. Too bad some of the rail fan community is unable to comprehend economics. The private sector freight railroads are in business for profit, so they can pay dividends to the stockholders and maintain the railroad. Unlike the government run railroads such as Amtrak, which never need to be held accountable because the taxpayer can always be pillaged for more. If the Royal Canadian Pacific is losing money on public trips but making money on private charters, it doesn’t take a German rocket scientist to conclude which portion needs to be cut and which portion needs to be expanded.
One of the many things people have foretold would happen under Hunter Harrison and not surprisingly coming true. People who live up there in the Canadian Rockies be sure to take pics & videos while you still can before it is gone for good!
Thank goodness I had the special privilege of riding it in August 2012. It not met but exceeded all my expectations.
Aren’t we all still waiting for subsidy critics to voluntarily kick in their part of the actual cost of our extensive “government-run” highway network. Gas taxes don’t come close to covering the costs of all streets and highways. A lot of property owners pay a big share of the cost of streets through assessments when they are built or rebuilt.

This is very sad news. Fortunately I was able to ride the RCP train from Calgary to Vancouver in 2011. Harrison has also taken the steam locomotive 2816 out of service, in contrast to Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern which are trying to keep steam alive. I know the CPR is a private enterprise and has to consider the bottom line first, but it is also part of Canada’s heritage and should show some respect for Canadians who feel that way. Harrison doesn’t understand this.

The prices to ride this train is very very expensive. I can’t afford to ride it. But would like to see it roll by somewhere.
Hunter does not understand the importance of history to all endeavors of mankind. He is simply the best friend an investor ever had until he drives away all the customers that are not captive. CN has been repairing the damage for some time. The best operating ratio is not always the best company to work for or invest in. American greed strikes again. Isn’t there a tv show called that; maybe they could do an show on Hunter
