i cant see to find a good way to make couplers stay on my cf7. i was lucky enough to gind 1 screw that fit a hole the previous owner drilled, and athearn coupler clips dont seem to fit. are there special clips that i dont know about?
Thanks

If what you have is the ATHEARN RTR CF-7 (I don’t know didilly about at RPP) A standard KD 5 will fit (I like the #43) IF you clip off the ‘lip’ onthe the coupler box’s lid.
Athearn’s design engineers located the screw’s 2-56 mounting hole off just enough to interfere with the KD’s normal action. Removing that lip allow the coupler to slide in. and center normally.
thanks, but its the railpower products version of the CF7 that i have. the athearn coupler clip is too long for the tabs on the end of the chassi. would it be possible to just cut them off and attach the KD couplers that are in the draft gear box to the shell somehow, or would it put too much stress on the plastic? im not going to try and use a 2 billion revolution per minute dremel tool with the tiny drill bit id need to make another hole.
Thanks

You could break off the Athearn pad and then build up a mounting pad with styrene on the RPP shell for a Kadde draft gear box. A Kadee height guage would be handy. Mounting the coupler to the RPP shell will not unduely stress it. I have done this with many of the various RPP shells and they work just fine.
If you don’t have the height gauge, mount a draft gear box on the Athearn frame, slide on the RPP shell, then mark the shell at the “top” of the coupler box, that is where the new mounting pad will have to be built up to.
