RS-1 Pilot

Hello Everybody,

I have an Atlas H.O. RS-1 that I have repainted and detailed as the Green Mountain #405. I am having difficulty finding some pilots to fit it. Walthers don’t seem to list one in their current catalogue and neither do Minitures by Eric so does anyone know where I am likely to find a couple to suit.

Also for the same loco I need the current logo for the cabsides the ones on the Microscale decal sheet are the earlier oblong box type and I need the 3-pointed triangle type.

If anyone could help I would be most grateful.

Regards Colin Cambridge U.K.

Not sure what you are talking about for the pilot - That ‘box’ shaped thing under the coupler? I suspect you may need to fabricate something using styrene sheet stock.

The ‘modern’ decals - Highball Graphics makes a ‘modern’ Green Mountain set: http://www.mgdecals.com/L-103.htm

If you look at the upper right part of the decal sheet, you will see two of the ‘small’ versions of the logo you are looking for.

Jim

Hello Jim,

Thanks for the info, you’re probably right regarding the pilot.I did think that might be the answer. I’ll try Highball, that does look like what I’m looking for.

Kind regards Colin

I agree w/ Jim, most pilots supplied/ molded on production locos, as either a generic or as delivered. Individual shops modified the origional fottboard to thier spec and purpose. My B&O early Geeps needed the boxed pilot w/ storage holes or slots for the MUs. fabricated various one to match the prototype from square styrene. These even carry into Chessie painted as not all recieved that special “Chessie” rock pilot.

One is actually seen on the Chessie GP40 in my signature.

Colin.

Would you happen to be looking for a plow for your pilot? I had a brass plow for an RS or RSD unit for awhile. I can not remember who made it. I put it on the front of an older Atlas RS3 that I detailed and painted. I remembered where I got it. Part # TS-802 near the bottom of this page. https://www.greenwayproducts.com/storeroom/brass/brass_corner/pilots_snowPlows.html

If it is not a plow but a standard step pilot then fabrication is the best thing to do. The plow interferes with the KD trip pin on a mating coupler. I sold the unit to a club member who uses it in commuter service pulling a half dozen coaches.

Pete

Thanks Pete,

I actually followed Jim’s suggestion and went ahead last evening and made a pair of pilot/plows from 10thou plastic sheet and this morning I fitted and painted them. The nose tip of the plow does not foul the trip pin and misses it by about 1mm and the bottom of the plow sits at the same height as the trip pin. Just got to get the decals from Highball and the Frog rerailers Details West to hang on the sides.

Many thanks for the help
