Does anyone know where I could find some good photos of various details on an Alco RS-3? I can find lots of pics of the entire loco via Google but not having much luck finding close ups. I need stuff like the truck side frames, pilot detail, etc.
Here are some pictures. NOTE: I did not take these pictures. - Peter

The trucks are standard trucks used under Alco, GE, BLW, and even a few EMD roadswitchers and cab units (usually referred to as the AAR-B truck). Pilot detail will vary by road so if you were modeling a specific railroad you will have to find appropriate pictures. If on the other hand you have a fictional road, you can pick whatever looks good.
I presume you are aware of the several phases of carbody louvres and filters on the long hood. Optional extras for the short hood were a steam generator or dynamic brake, but many roads had neither. I have yet to find a really good picture of the roof detail for a db equipped RS-3.

On the top of each hood, just above the headlight, there’s a square protrusion with a lid. What is this, on the prototype? I’ve seen one photo of the top of it, and there’s a hinge so it must be a lid for something. My guess is, it’s a hatch for filling the sand box, but I’d like to know for sure.
right on the money – it’s the lid for the sand boxes.
Edit; Sorry, Photo’s removed. My error.[D)]

Warning: The pictures of the “GN” 182 just posted are actually of an RS-1. In fact it was originally a M&StL engine, eventually going to a short line and then a Proctor&Gamble plant. The RS-1 is more or less a lengthened switcher with a 1000hp 539 prime mover. There are quite a few differences between it and the 1600hp RS-3 with the 244 prime mover.
