RS-3 question

On many pictures of RS-3’s I see a pipe of some sort just ahead of the cab on the engineer’s side of the long hood. In some pictures this comes up from the side of the long hood, below the curve at the top, and on others it appears to come up from the top, inside of the curve. In photos of units still oeprating, it appears this pipe is cut down to the hood and capped. I have an RS-3 operating manual and it makes no mention of this item, even in the servicing section. What is this? Crankcase ventilation?

I believe it is a crankcase vent.

Hi Randy, I think Dave Husman is right. Alco carbody diesels of the same vintage definitely have a crankcase vent on the roof, and what you’re describing sounds like the same thing. Andy

Makes sense. That was the only thing I could think of myself. I’ve looks at a couple of RS-3 operator and maintenence manuals and the cutaways never show this.
