RTA proposes merging agency planning departments

Savings on merged planning departments? What about improved services because there is better integration between different modes of transport?

@ Ian: being from “Down Under”, you are probably not conversant with Illinois politics. If you haven’t read any of the follow-up stories about the Metra board scandal, you should know that one of the nominees to replace a resigned board member has NO experience in public transportation, but years of experience in Illinois politics. This, of course, made him the perfect choice in the eyes of the state senator (and career politician) who selected him. As reported in the Chicago Tribune, others interested in serving as Metra board members did not even receive a letter acknowledging receipt of their application, let alone an interview, until after the selection was announced. There is no doubt that, should the planning department merger take place, the surviving planners will not be the most senior, nor the best qualified; rather, they will be the ones who pledge the highest “donations” to the campaign funds of their respective political sponsors.
