Heck, I even build locomotives from kits.

I knew this poll would come up soon. I am willing to buy RTR or kits to get what i need but i prefer RTR

For non motor items, I find RTR a waste of money. Kits are fun to build, cheap, and you have the personal satisfaction of building it. When I gain the skill, I will defenitley want to attempt a locomotive kit.

I like kits but there is that moment when RTR is just better. More expensive you say, well, yes you are right sometimes. As many have said on last weeks topic about RTR and kits the RTR cars and locos have more detail, locos are DCC ready and most run better. You get what you pay for. Kits are cheap because you do the work. RTR is higher because 1) overseas labor, 2) cardboard and plastic pakaging, 3) metal wheels, and 4) better couplers, add in some other things I didnt mention and there is the price. Oh and inflation. As for me, I like both. I will buy kits when, 1) the LHS has the cars I want only in kit form and 2) I dont have a lot of money.

RTR is nice, but an inexpensive kit can add a few additional cars to the layout for the same price as RTR. I miss Roundhouse and Athearn kits

Kits are just more fun to build.

I’m into too many other aspects of the hobby at this time to get bogged down with kits so it’s RTR. In all honesty if it’s not an old fashioned wood kit I don’t find it challenging enough to waste my time on it. All those flimsy hand rails… No thanks!

what is the first word of this wonderful hobby?..MODEL railroading…and that means modeling…RTR takes the modeling out of the hobby…give me a kit anyday…chuck

kits are the way to go…buliding a MODEL that I can run on a RAILROAD track is fun…cause you can move it and stuff…as with static models well there just that static…thats my bucktwonintyeight J.W.
