Runaway flat car on CSX caught on video!

The last car of CSX Q137 came uncoupled this morning and it rolled away for 30 miles before finally stopping on its own in Cumberland, MD. The trainorders.com sandpatch webcam caught video of the runaway intermodal flat car as it passed the webcam location. Really amazing to watch the car pass by all by itself at 50-60mph.

Incredable!! Without knowing much about CSX, it seems like something that might happen out west.

It did happen out west. Abuot ten or so years ago on the Nevada Northern a flat got loose and went down the hill slamming into a train comming up. It damaged one of there steamers and put it out of commision for a while.

Didn’t that happen on the Union Pacific as well? (I’m not bashing them, I’m being honest.) Somewhere a train of wood/lumber on flats and crossbeam cars got loose, and wound up derailing somewhere.

Is this correct? Or am I dreaming up something?[:p] If I am, that was a pretty realistic dream.

I recall a story about a runnaway when they were building Hoover Dam. It was on a temporary track that went down to a gravel pit. The car rolled down the hill and stopped near the pit without anyone noticing. Somehow word of the runnaway reached the men in the pit and they went to the track to see it. They waited and waited then they started looking for the car figureing it had derailed on the way down. They spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out what happened to the car before they realised the car was the one that had been sitting there unharmed right in front of them the whole time.

so in this day and age, with all the derailing features and the like, you can still have runaway trains & cars??? Easter

did any of you see Atomic Train the movie. It was about a runaway train carrying nuclear waste, and a Russian Bomb loaded without notice, and it is derailed by man power, and then the nuke blows up and destroys the Denver Area, at least there wasn’t anything on that car. I wonder what people thought when they saw a flatcar roll by on a crossing

man this stinks i have to pay to join to see it

yes the up did have a runaway train of lumber and the up brought lumber to help rebuild the homes in california.

That is one of my favorite movies. I’ve seen it about three times on the Sci-Fi channel. It is awesome!

Derails are normally placed on sidings not mainlines. The purpose of a derail is to protect the mainline or protect a service facility from rolling equipment. In either case the speed of the rolling equipment would be slow.

I smell a rat here, we will call him “Angle ****”.

A few years ago the WSOR had a few cars run away from there Janesville WI facility. I can remember and article where one witness made a comment that they stopped for the flashing lights, and suddenly saw three Boxcars go running through the crossing with no locomotive!

Very interesting. If it went 30 miles and stopped in Cumberland, I’m guesstimating that it broke free somewhere around Fairhope (give or take a few miles). Good thing nothing was following R137.

Now this may seem like a silly question, but what did that do to the rest of the train. Since it was the last car and would’ve had the EOT device, does that mean the rest of the train had to stop due to losing the data from the EOT? Would that have been cause enough for the train to go into emergency braking? Never really thought of what might happen to a train if it loses the EOT device.

Well, the air hose would have come disconected, so the train would have gone into emergency.

What year was that the CSX had a runaway it was the crew had gotten off the train and had a brick on the pedal so when they got of the train it started to move and soon became a runaway. I just can’t remember the year in fact the Milw Journal Sental did a story on it.

That Famous runaway locomotive from the CSX is still running around on CSX, it came through Wisconsin as Run through power a few months ago. It was a pretty good story.
