Does anyone recall a product from about 20 years ago which consisted of an attractively designed and varnished strip of wood about 2 feet long about 5 inches wide on which was mounted a straight piece of O gauge track and adjustable rollers? The idea was that you could not only display a loco, but also run it and demonstrate its features. If so, do you remember what it was called?
This sounds like the display track that was furnished with some Kohs engines – the rollers were ‘flush’ with the railhead, rather than being raised in pairs on adjustable carriages to serve as a ‘rolling road’ for testing locomotives.
I think there was a counterpart in Gauge 1 from Fine Art Modrls.
This sounds like the item, but the one I remember was advertised for sale (about $100) for a few years in the toy train magazines.
See Lionel 6-23009 for one example of what I think he is describing.
Thanks guys for replying to my post. The Lionel roller base on eBay comes the closest to what was advertised in the magazines, but I am sure it was not Lionel. I used to subscribe to both CTT and OGR back around 2005 to 2015 but did not keep those copies. This would have been where I saw the ads I’m referring to. I thought about purchasing one at the time but really could not afford it. Later on the ads were no longer printed in the magazines. My thought was that one of them might show up on eBay, hence the query for the specific name. I really appreciate your taking the time to do research and respond.
Lying in bed last night, I think it came to me. I’m pretty sure it was called “Dynamic Roller Base”, but I could not verify this via an internet search. Does anyone else remember such a name?
Well, this did pop up, but it’s HO…
Thanks, Mark. That is definitely the type of product I remember. I wish I could remember the specific years the ads ran in the O gauge magazines. It would have been between 2004 and 2015, and for not many years during that span. It appears they would be a very rare item at this stage indeed.
Hmm…
Wait, I just remembered that I have CTT on DVD from '87 to 2014!
Time to do some searching…
I sort of remember this. It was advertised in CTT back in the 90s or early 2000s.
I think it came in different gauges.
Thanks, BigAl. I’m sure others recall it as well. I wish I could have afforded one at the time. It seems like a nice and convenient way to attractively display and demonstrate a locomotive and its features.
