I know that this isn’t a “Brass” forum, but this IS a running question about United Brass Hon3 trains! I don’t a way of runing this scale. I finaly decided to put DC power to it, I got it to run…it makes this sort of clicking noise! Is this “Normal” ? I suspect this IS screw drive.
It is probably a worm on the motor shaft driving a work gear on the driver axle.
A possibility there is a worm driving a worm gear with a spur gear on the same shaft as the worm gear. The spur gear drives a spur gear on the driver axle. This is called compound gear reduction.
Some imported locos had fiber gears and there may be a bad tooth on a gear.
Check to make sure that your main and eccentric rods are lightly lubed and not catching with each other with the driver revolutions. Generally, a ‘clicking’ noise on a brass steamer means that the rods are hitting each other.
Best way to isolate and cure this problem is to disassemble the superstructure and gearbox so that the mechanism is running free. Then push it along a piece of glass. If it is the rods, the loco will hesitate as the rods scrape against each other. Usually just a slight adjustment of the rods will cure the problem right up. Then very lightly lube the rods with Labelle #8 light lube. A small drop on the end of a toothpick should do it.
