Running Proto 2000 with Atlas Engines

I have several Proto 2000 F7 unites (DC) and desire to run a Atlas Train Master (Silver/DC) unit with then. How well will they run well together in DC?

First of all, [#welcome] to the forums!

My experience has been that my Atlas & Protos don’t play very nice together. The Protos tend to run slower than the Atlas locos. Both brands make good engines - smooth reliable operation & strong p0ullers generally speaking, but with my DC layout I have to be rather judicious in which engines get assigned to a train if I want to run a multiple-unit lashup. even within a particular brand there are differences, but not nearly as pronounced.

Say, this is one thing I may be able to speak to, DC matching. Have you ever thought of putting a a resistor in the fast ones to match the slow ones? A variable pot between one of the motor leads will allow you to tune in run times & then read the Ohms to find a (the resistor to add) resistor that will DC match the engines. However, after break-in & fair running, it was good practice to ‘pace’ the units at one time or another (every so often), to make sire they are still matched. In the DCC world, CV’s do all that for you.

Welcome to the forums.

The best way I know to test them in DC is to put them on the track about a foot apart and let them run. If they stay reasonably the same distance apart, they’ll do OK. If there is a noticable difference before they have gone very far, not a good match.

That is one of the advantages of DCC, being able to program the speed of your locos to match each other. Oh well, until I hit the jackpot, I’ll just have to test run and see who likes to run with who.

Good luck,

Richard

Kind of a strange combination, doncha think?

The Wabash ran sets of F7’s with a Trainmaster spliced in the middle…

One important thing to note is that not all models in Proto 2000 range are created equal. Some models have a semi - open Athearn style motor and others have a Kato style flat can motor.

If the Walthers F7 has a flat can type motor it should be able to run with an Atlas Trainmaster.
